Do Guinea Fowl Actually Control Ticks? What the Research Shows

Short answer: The reputation traces to two small New York studies that found reduced ADULT deer tick abundance on lawns — not the tiny summer nymphs that cause most Lyme disease. A 2024 study found guinea fowl show no control effect on lone star ticks, and can even host tick nymphs themselves.

Where the Reputation Comes From

Two small New York studies — 1992 in Suffolk County, 2004 in Dutchess County — found free-ranging guinea fowl reduced adult blacklegged (deer) tick abundance in lawn habitats. But the reduction was restricted to adult ticks; it did not significantly reduce nymphs, the tiny summer-stage ticks responsible for most human Lyme disease cases. Guineas eating the life stage that infects the fewest people, in the habitat that holds the fewest ticks, is the honest reading of even the favorable studies.

The 2024 Study That Changes the Picture

A 2024 study in the Journal of Medical Entomology looked at guinea fowl and the lone star tick and found no evidence guinea fowl are an effective biological control for that species. More strikingly, the same study found guinea fowl themselves serve as hosts for lone star tick nymphs — the birds can pick ticks up onto their own bodies rather than exclusively eating them.

So Do They Help or Not?

It depends on which tick species dominates your property. Against the blacklegged deer tick, older research suggests a genuine, modest reduction in adult ticks on lawns. Against the lone star tick — increasingly common across the South and Southeast — newer research suggests guineas may do considerably less good.
