Coyotes Are the Real Threat, By a Wide Margin

USDA national surveys have put coyotes at about 52–54 percent of sheep predator deaths in different survey years, and up to 64 percent of lamb losses specifically. Coyotes take a noticeably bigger share of lambs than grown sheep — a grown ewe is a harder target.

Guardian Animals Aren't Optional If Predators Are a Real Risk

The consistent finding across studies: flocks running a guardian animal lose meaningfully fewer lambs and adults to predators than flocks without one. Fencing helps but rarely solves the problem completely on larger acreage where checking every foot of fence line daily isn't realistic.

Three Main Guardian Options

Livestock guardian dogs bond to the flock and live with it full-time rather than visiting as a family pet. Options differ enough in temperament, management needs, and cost that it's worth understanding each before choosing one.
